Amazon is expected to release a larger screen Kindle e-book reading device in time for Christmas.
There have been numerous complaints regarding eye strain, and if Amazon is serious about attracting newspapers and magazine distributors in the future, eliminating possible eye issues is absolutely critical. Furthermore, a larger screen will open the door for advertisers to finally try their hand at the growing e-book market. There isn't an advertising model available on the current Kindle, which is potentially losing Amazon millions of dollars. In addition to advertising, it's possible educators will finally hop on board with the device, as more universities begin to digitize their libraries. Students tired of paying high costs for books could also begin to use digitized books and e-book reader instead of shelling out dough for pricey college texts. Asian screen manufacturers are reportedly now producing 10-inch screens, NPD Group DisplaySearch analyst Jennifer Colegrove recently said. The market for e-book readers will increase to three million in 2009, which is a drastic increase from the one million number last year. The second-generation Kindle e-book reader, Kindle 2, is available now through Amazon for $359, with a six-inch screen. Since the original launched last year, Amazon has seen incredible demand for Kindle, with the company struggling to manufacture enough devices for all interested consumers. Along with Amazon, Sony has its own e-book reading device, with News Corp. and Hearst interested in developing e-book hardware for future product launches. |
